Save files not working?

So I decided that I wanted to play Earthbound. I made sure to save when I needed to, both in game and using the emulator save function. Now, when I boot up Earthbound, neither my in game save files nor my emulator save files work. There are some files listed under "saves" but I don't know what to do with them. How do I get my save files back? I don't really want to start all over again.

where is snes9x located, and how did you launch it (e.g. by double-clicking on the .exe, or by double-clicking on a rom file and telling Windows to open it with snes9x)?
