The Uninstaller Problem Uncovered |
 |
Finally, with help from Alyas, the original reporter of the problem, I managed to track down the Snes9x uninstaller deleting your desktop folder - but the problem appears more alarming than it really is...
Its seems that not all icons on your desktop are actually stored in your desktop folder, some are forced there by the Windows registry. If only registry icons and the Snes9x icon are present when you uninstall Snes9x, the Setup Factory uninstaller program, the commercial installer/uninstaller I use, unhelpfully deletes your now empty desktop folder! The result is a grey screen, and when you click on where the desktop used to be, Windows pops up a dialog telling you the desktop folder has been moved or deleted. All seemingly very alarming!
I've installed Snes9x on a fresh install of Windows 98, and then uninstalled it and the file count returned to the original fresh install count and the free space returned to a similar, though slightly less, level - I put this down to the registry growing in size, or maybe the swap file. Basically, what this is telling me is that the uninstaller isn't deleting anything else, other than an empty folder, but an important one at that.
Now to the fix: reboot and Windows will recreate the deleted desktop folder. If you don't want to reboot, you can manually recreate the folder using Windows explorer started from the still visible Start menu; the folder is called Desktop and its normally in your C:\WINDOWS folder. I'll make a new release of Snes9x soon, you could just install this over the current release - don't uninstall Snes9x first - and then uninstall will work normally there after.
There seems to be no way to prevent the uninstaller deleting the empty Desktop folder, so I've removed the Snes9x desktop shortcut from the install package - if you want a shortcut there you'll have to manually create it in future releases.
I'm sorry to all the people I've alarmed when they saw reports like "Snes9x will destroy Windows", etc.

Server / DNS problems... |
 |
Just as we thought we had recovered from a server crash, another problem slips up... We moved to a new network, normally this DNS change kicks in pretty fast(1, 2 days tops)... This time they took quite a long time(and it still doesn't work everywhere)...
Also I still think we have some sort of hardware problem, since the server keeps locking up every once in a while... We are looking into that problem, but have no idea on when we've solved it... Maybe the upcomming service pack for Win2k will solve a few problems...

Problem with uninstalling new Snes9x Windows beta release? |
 |
Can anyone who has experienced problems UNINSTALLING the new Snes9x Windows beta release please contact me by e-mail. As far as I can tell, only one person so far has reported that uninstalling Snes9x deleted his desktop folder and that he had to manually recreate it. Unfortunately, he didn't contact me directly, instead he posted a message on Snes9x forum and e-mailed lots of emulation web sites about the problem. Needless to say, I can't reproduce the problem, and I've installed and uninstalled Snes9x lots of times, including installing Snes9x in silly locations. This could mean one of several things: 1) The problem only appears on a version of Windows I don't have - I've got access to and tested the install/uninstall process on Windows 95, 98 and NT 4, but that still leaves several other versions of Windows 95, Windows 98SE, Windows ME and Windows 2000. 2) The guy's machine was in a broken state when he tried to uninstall Snes9x and it was only by chance that it was uninstalling Snes9x that actually broke it. 3) The exact installation process he followed isn't as he described in the forum and I've been doing something slightly different from him that worked all the time for me. 4) The guy is lying and is spreading vicious rumors about Snes9x, trying to prevent people from using it. 5) Err, some other reason. Gary

No Snes9x Release Tonight... |
 |
...Sorry, didn't check with Jerremy whether he'd changed the web site upload password - he has and I don't know what the new password is so I can't upload the new beta release tonight.
I'm behind a very effective firewall during the day tomorrow, so the release won't happen until I get home in the evening - if Jerremy is able to supply me with the password by then.
Sorry to everyone who was hoping for a release today.

Sorry to all the would be beta testers... |
 |
With the major server problems over the past week or two, the NetPlay beta test program turned out to be a non-starter - sorry to all the keen people who volunteered to test NetPlay 'out in the wild'.
Instead of sending out the new Windows Snes9X release to a select few beta testers, I've decided to release the beta to the world at large - in a day or two, once the server has stabilised.
Could only the people who requested to be beta testers please supply e-mail feedback; I'm sorry, but I will have to ignore 'how do I configure networks/firewalls/direct modem connections/name servers?' and 'How do I get netplay working?' type questions from everyone else for now.
I've not been idle during snes9x.com's down-time; I've used the delay to write a sound config dialog that I've always meant to get around to writing but never had the time.
Looking forward to beta testers feedback, both good and bad,
Gary.
