Issue with D pad axis when using SNES9x on Mac

Been having some serious issues trying to get snes9x to allow the d pad on my snes controller (which is running through a usb adapter) to function properly
All buttons map to snes9x fine except for the d pad, when i try to assign the d pad if i try to map d up to up it greys out down and i can't assign to down. same with left and right. seems it only wants to accept the axis or something?
ive tried with a ps1 mini pad, a ps4 dualshock and neither of them work either
if anyone could help thatd be amazing, or if anyone knows how to get to the config file for snes9x so i can manually amend it to the real controls
im using osx mojave but have tried on another machine on el capitan and same issue
