SNES9x 1.60 not responding after monitor sleeps

I've noticed that if I walk away from SNES9x v1.60 for more than 10 minutes and my monitor has turned off due to my Windows settings, the emulator will freeze and become unresponsive upon waking the monitor again. I am not sure if it's due to the video output device becoming unavailable, or, my hunch is the sound output (I am currently using primarily the monitor's built-in speakers). Anything I can provide to narrow down this issue?

confirmed on 1.60 x64 on Win10. audio is piped over HDMI to my TV via a GTX 960; snes9x goes unresponsive if I power cycle my TV.

OP, in case this is manufacturer-specific - what kind of GPU are you using?

I've recently cannibalized my gaming PC and moved the GPU to my server for transcoding, so this is all on-board graphics and audio at the moment (hence my decision to fire up an emulator).
