Movie recording in El Capitan

I'm using Snex9x 1.53 (which is now 5 years old (!), and urgently needs a new version) with OS X El Capitan on an early-2013 MacBook Pro Retina. I want to use the movie recording function, but when I press Record Movie, there's a flash on the screen, the emulation pauses, and all the options become grey and unusable, including the quit option, which forces me to use Force Quit.
