Problems with the options menus during gameplay

Just installed Snes9x on my mac, and are having som problems with the option bars. During gameplay all options turn gray and can't be selected. I have to force quit the app and restart to make any changes. The file, config and all other tabs are useless during gameplay. What can I do?
