Games play slowly, choppy audio

Hello, I'm not that computer savvy, but I downloaded snes9x 1.53 onto my son's compute stick (it plays Minecraft, so I imagine it's powerful enough) and also Chrono Trigger. Both files work perfectly on our desktop. However, on the compute stick, the games play out slowly, the audio is choppy. I tried multiple snex9x versions, and even tried a few different games/roms from other websites, and all do this.
Clearly it's a computer issue, but I am unfamiliar with what to look for or do to fix it.
I downloaded a Gameboy Color emulator and games, all run perfect.
I did see where another user had to turn off "vsync," which fixed their issue, but I could not successfully figure out how to do this on the compute stick. The option to do this on the graphics control panel simply isn't there.
Any ideas?
