D Pad troubles for mac

hey guys,
Im using a classic snes controller with a usb adapter. For some reason when I try to map out my buttons it seems as if the right and down buttons on the d pad are permanently pressed down. I've played games like mega man x and super mario world and the result is that my character never stops running to the right. If I press left then the character will go left but the point is that I cant stop him from going right. I've checked automatic fire and its set on default. Im sure this problem has been reported before but I couldn't find a solution to it. Any help would be appreciated since this is extremely frustrating!
