running SNES9x1.53 on Mac: Issues with USB controller, Dpad

I am running SNES9x on my Mac Pro (Lion) and I'm using an original SNES controller which plug into a usb adapter. I know it works because I downloaded the gamepad app for mac and set it up.
My issue is when I'm trying to use it, it's almost like the down and right buttons are stuck. My character moves without me pushing anything. This is one several different games.
Any advice would be awesome!
edit: yes I installed the emulator enhancer (but i did not pay for it).
