Problem with ROM files saving

My friends ROM files weren't saving to the emulator, but that's because they opened the ROM file, and then save, instead of opening the emulator, loading the ROM, and then saving it. I don't know much about how that all works, but I'd like to know what happened, and if there's a chance the files can be recovered.
