SteelSeries Nimbus Directional Pad Weird Behavior

I am trying to configure the directional pad... when I click the UP button with my mouse and then push the UP directional, it seems to take the assignment... same with the LEFT... however, when I try the same with the DOWN and RIGHT buttons, it overwrites the UP and LEFT buttons for some reason
Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?
This is on SNES9x 1.57 on MacOS X 10.14.2
