Sound preferences closing

I was playing a game, and got to a monotonous part, so I went to turn the sound off. I couldn't find a mute button, so I went to the sound preferences and turned the HZ to zero. After I had finished that part of the game, I went to turn the sound up, and when I clicked ok, the window that was running Snes9x closed. I'm on Ubuntu, and I'd really like some help.
