Both Controllers Controlling Same Player

Hi There,
Forgive me if this is redundant, but I couldn't seem to find this topic.
I am running SNES9x 1.43 on a Mac (10.6.8, if it matters), and I am attempting to use two Tomee USB controllers for a two-player game.
I have USB Overdrive, which seems to recognize both controllers. When I go to play the game, however, both controllers control the same player. If I do a player swap, they both control the other player. So, both controllers works, but it seems that they're always assigned to the same player, whether it be player one or two. Is there any way to assign one to each player? Don't seem to see that in the menu options.
I'm pretty non-technical, as you can probably tell from this post, so please 1) let me know I need to provide any other info and 2) keep any responses in lay terms as much as possible.
