Android Version Help - Cheats

I've had great success with the Android version (on NVidia Shield Tablets). But only recently I thought I'd play with cheats and have had no results. I thought someone might could help.
For example:
In playing Chrono Trigger I found several Game Genie and Action Replay codes worth trying. I go to the cheat submenu, I create the new cheat, I name it, and I make sure it's enabled (green OK). But no matter what I try (damage, HP, money, etc.) I never see results. I've tried rebooting the game proper from a save file as well as save states.
Is there perhaps a step I've missed?
