save states issue

Hello !
I rushed to this forum as quick as possible as I realised that by just clicking a random button I just went back to the beginning of Earthbound while I was at the Dusty Desert. So pretty much a LOT of gaming hours lost.
I read a little around and about, so to make this clear : i have to save the game by using the emulator menu to be sure not to lose my progression next time, right ?
Also, I search aroung the web to find a saved state that would bring me back where I was, but the file was in a .rar format. the other saved files are in .srm, .oops, etc, but are opened in 'DLL commune du shell Windows'. Though I can't find this program when I try to change the settings, and it won't work if i try to set the saved file so it can open in Snesx9...
Can anyone help ? I am not willing to start the game all over again, it's been three times already !...
