I need help

I'm sure this probably has been brought up numerous times, but can't seem to find an answer.. my problem is :
I downloaded snes9x, installed it directly off of C: (as was recommended) made sure everything was pointing to the proper places (saves folder) and made sure the saves folder was NOT read only.
I start a game, save it via normal game saving methods. leave the game, come back, load the game back up, and there is no save there.
What am I doing wrong?
using Win7 64bit
