Seiken Densetsu 3 - two bugs

So I'm at Gorva the Shade boss in Seiken Densetsu 3, and thee issues have been going on for a while but it's made the game very difficult to play now.
Two things:
1) My characters will just stop at the door where we entered a room and not help in battle, no matter how I change the battle settings in the menu, and
2) I can't open my Y menu (items and spells) when bosses are using spells, including many seconds before they start using the spell. so, effectively, when fighting Gorva I couldn't do anything but attack- any time i tried to use a spell, gorva was also eventually going to use a spell.
Any thoughts? Is this an Snes9x glitch or something I'm doing wrong/misunderstanding in the game?
