Using ps4 controller with snes9x - just doesn't respond

I've got my ps4 controller paired properly with my fire tv, and works fine with my n64 emulator, so side loaded snes9x. Works fine up to the point a game launches, then nothing happens. the game loads fine, but no buttons respond. Appears to be detected correctly (shows as PS3 controller in the emulator) but is just unresponsive. Anyone had any luck with this? I've also mapped out a custom controller just to check, but that didn't work either.
