grayed out menu options

I'm using Snes9x 1.53 on Mac OS X Yosemite.
Upon opening a ROM, all of my top menu bar options are grayed out. When I press ESC, the ROM pauses. Sometimes the menu bar options become available; sometimes they don't. In any case, the ROM stays paused even if I press ESC again, and I can't figure out how to unpause it.
Any ideas?
