Virtual Gamepad Not Responding

since I can't afford a MOGA Controller yet I've opted to just keep to games which I can play well without one, which would be the case if the virtual gamepad would actually respond to anything I do. I'm using the Sony Xperia E4 and Android 4.4.4 ad have only just installed the emulator. anything I need to do before hand to get the virtual controller working or should it just be all set up and ready to go from the start?
