Save State and Version questions

Hello everyone,
This is my first post here.
I'm using Snes9x in Ubuntu Linux 12.04
Question 1: Is there a quicker way to save the state of a game other than going to file->save state. This is difficult to do while playing a game and often I lose time in a level when I do this repeatedly.
Quesetion 2: How can I find out which version of Snes9x I have and what the current version is.
