Bass Masters Classic Pro Edition - black screen upon load

I'm having trouble loading Bass Masters Classic Pro Edition. I've tried multiple roms, which all work in zsnes and even Snes9x 1.43, but I'd like to get it to work in Snes9x 1.53 as it is my preferred emulator.
Whenever I load it, I get the regular checksum message and just a plain black screen and it sits there.
Anybody know what is causing this?
