Snes9x Super Metroid bumpers crash

Alright so I don't know if this is the rom's problem or snes9x, but i'm playing super metroid, having a blast, then i try to change my beams, so I naturally pop up the map, then casually press rshift, which is my right bumper, then black screen. no status screen with all my equipement, black screen. the music is still going and i'm forced to reset. Now that kinda annoys me, I can play without my customization options but if anyone knows where is the problem il'l be pretty grateful
