Snes9x 1.53 is crashing my soundcard

Mostly right after loading the application, but also (strangely) once after loading a game.

I get a BSOD and the error points to my sound card, the cmaudio.sys driver. This is the C-Media Wavetable Synth Device, otherwise known as my Startech PCI Soundcard.

Why would this be happening? How can I prevent it?

crappy audio chipset drivers are crappy. see if updated drivers are available (if not from the soundcard vendor, then directly from CMedia).
