Having difficulty loading/saving data/states for psp version

Hey there,
Saving states and loading them is a very hit-or-miss process with my psp. Frequently can't access snesx menu, or power off the system, or correctly load/save states or in-game load/saves.
I'm trying to play a game that otherwise works perfectly: Front Mission (Japan) [En by FH v1.0b]
I simply can't get a save to stick.
Snes euphoria R5 w/ GCC 4.3.2 CRC32 84da7cfe
Recommended SNES version to play this?
