How to configure custom joystick?

I currently using a seimitsu joystick (LS-56) and some of the time it doesn't register when I press a different direction. The joystick works perfect on new PC games. With that said I don't know if there is a setting I am missing in Snes9x. I am also not sure if I need to switch to a 4 direction guide or joystick. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
