2 Player. HELP

Hey there!
Snes9x is great. It runs very smoothly and I have enjoyed revisiting my childhood. I am using the newest version on a mac book version 10.6.8
As I said, one player runs great. I have one of those usb super nintendo controllers that I have been using. I wanted to start sharing the joy with my friends so I ordered a second usb controller. The computer and snes9x recognize the controller. I input the controls under config>configure controllers>player 2... Everything lights up when pressed and is just peachy. I have tried to play several games (Donkey Kong, Super Mario World, Contra iii) and none of them recongnized the second controller. The first controller still works great, and I have even tried swapping the controller ports. So I know it's not the controller. Also, I CANNOT control player two even with the mac keyboard.
Any help on this would be great!
Thanks!
