Can't create freeze state or any other tools...

I've loaded 1.43 first not realizing the it wasn't the latest build. It crashed and hadn't saved anything at all. I deleted it, did some searching I reinstalled the 1.53 build 113. It seems to atleast remember the character/player when I close the emulator now, However pretty much everything in a drop down menu at the top is greyed out, including creating a freeze state. Or loading one if i could save one in the first place... Any suggestions?
I'm running OS 10.4.11 (tiger) if that matters. And trying to play Zelda: A link to the past.
