Illegal byte sequence

I keep getting a error code saying illegal byte sequence after I patcher a super mario world rom. Is there a fix for this
1) This belongs in the tech support forums. I will move it.
2) Chances are good the patch is bad, or it's not patching correctly. Has anyone else verified the patch works?
