… There are lots of spurious looking websites that offer these kinds of files. Is there a legitimate source for them? It is a direct 3d dynamic link library if I am not mistaken.

What OS are you running? If its Windows 7 or newer make sure you've installed DirectX 9.0c. Here's the end-user runtime:

Even though DX11 is installed by default in Windows 7, Snes9x requires files from DX9 that aren't included, hence needing to install it.

After I posted this, I did recall that Microsoft themselves has a DirectX runtime updater. But it is a timely question if anyone is still trying to run Snes9x on a desktop. This was on Windows 10 by the way, sorry.

I seem to be having a similar issue. The link in the .txt no longer works. The link posted in this thread works but when I go to install it, it says it is only available for various older versions of Windows. I'm using Windows 10. So how do I get the d3dx9_42.dll ?

The link in this thread is still ok and also works on windows 10.

I had issues with the link upthread, but
this link worked for me on Win10 x64 version 1803.
