Need help mapping USB controller with SNEX9x v1.53

I am helping friend. We can start a Mario All Stars ROM, get to where we want to select 1 player game, and my friend says the B button is supposed to start it but nothing happens. We went into the Joypads setup I think and mapped all buttons/keys on the USB joypad. Others like Select seem to work. This is also on Windows 10 and using generic controller.
