RetroLink USB Gamepad doesn't work!

I know there are dozens (maybe hundreds) of these, but I can't seem to find the particular issue that I'm dealing with.
I just got my RetroLink USB gamepads, and when I go to run the calibration through the Control Panel, it works just fine. All 8 directions on the D-pad, and all of the buttons work fine.
When I launch the emulator to map it, all of the buttons work fine, but I can't do the up/down+left/right (corners) to work at all. Beyond that, when I launch a ROM, the controller itself doesn't work at all.
I'm totally new to all of this, and in desperate need of some help. Thanks in advance!
