Snes9x 1.5.3 - Garbled Display

I recently compiled snes9x from source on my Raspberry Pi 2B, and I've run into an issue -- whenever I start snes9x, I get a garbled display that looks like the following:



Input still works (I can press esc to exit the emulator). Is there any reason for this behavior?
