Gamepad configuration glitchy

I'm having a tough time setting up my Retrolink USB SNES gamepad. I've tried a number of models including Logitech and some unbranded Chinese junk that feels like it's gonna explode in my hands but Snes9x won't let me configure them. When I press a button it might register it as something else, it'll highlight others green, some blue, and sometimes it changes a different setting. It's really buggy.

I made an error with this report. I see now that in order to configure the joypad you must disable it first, then re-enable it after configuring it. A bit of a flaw in the design imo but at least I can now use my joypad.
