Super Mario Kart 2 player on Wii

I have Super Mario Kart running just fine on SNES9x for the Wii. I can play the single player okay using a Gamecube controller, but whenever I try to play a 2 player game the second GC controller won't work. It works fine on all the other ROMs I have, just not this one. Any idea why 2-player won't work?
