Snes 1.52 randomly crashes

Post by iceman101101 »

Top extra double-fingerpoint kudos to BearOso, zones, and OV2 for the new version! It's been running really well for me, except for a small randomly occurring issue I'm having.

1.52 seem to crash on me at random. At first I thought it might have something to do with the settings I had it on, but to no avail, it still happens, albeit not often, but it does say 1 out of 5 times I run the emulator for a few hours.

Right now, I have VSync on, Triple Buffering on, Frame Skip at auto, hq3x selected, 1920x1080 (32), XAudio2 as the sound driver, input Hz at 31900, output Hz at 32000, 64ms delay as my settings.

My machine specs are AMD Phenom 9800 (Quad 2.5GHz), 4GB PC5300, Win7 Pro (x32), nVidia 9600GT, DirectX 11 (updated 9.0c runtimes, Aug 2009 I think...)

From what I could tell on the forum here, some people have had 1.52 crash on specific games, but for me it seems to happen with any game (C4, Super FX, SA-1, et al) at random. I will continue to take note of whether changing the settings makes any difference or if it tends to happen with certain games, but so far I haven't noticed any patterns.

Edit: Forgot to add that I'm running 1.52 fix4.

After a few days of running 1.52, I think I have established that the crashing always occurs under XAudio2. Ever since I switched to DirectSound, I haven't had any trouble. Most likely specific to my system, but if anyone else has issues, perhaps this will help pinpoint the trouble.

From my understanding, older audio cards don't like Xaudio2.

What operating system are you using? 32 or 64bit? Version of Snes9x? Is the text at the bottom of the window white when you load the game?
These suggestions are usually the solution to your issue!

you understand wrong.

Older Drivers dislike Xaudio. The cards don't care how you feed it sound information as long as the drivers can support it.

Crap, you're right, I did. It's onboard; Realtek HDA, driver v6.00.0001.5998 (12-8-2009). As I understand it, Realtek isn't exactly a leader in quality... or so I've been told.
