Mortal Kombat sound issue

Post by Kelttuz »

Hello.

I'm having what I can describe as rapid sound crackling (something like 4 or 5 'sound crackling effects' every second) when playing Mortal Kombat (the first one) on SNES9X. The crackling starts specifically at the title screen (the issue does not occur before that point, during the companies' intros like when "Akklaim" and "Developed by Sculptured Software" appear, for example). The crackling then persists from the title screen to the options screen, to the character selection screen and, basically for the whole game (during matches, too). I'm playing the USA / NTSC variant. But I also tried the European variant of the game and the issue is the same.

In the Sound options of the emulator I've tried basically all the options available to 'fix' the problem, to no avail.

1) Changing the Playback Rates from 8KHz to 42KHz only changes the crackling's 'pitch' (higher pitch at lower rates, lower pitch at higher rates). The emulator simply crashes at 48KHz, however.
2) Changing the Buffer Length had no effect, the crackling persists with any one of them.
3) Disabling Channels didn't change anything (that one I found curious, I was expecting all sounds to just be gone entirely but the crackling continued even with all of them disabled).
4) Disabling 16-bit Sound didn't do anything.
5) Disabling Stereo only made the crackling in Mono.
6) Reverse Stereo only made the crackling... in reverse lol.
7) Disabling Sync Sound didn't help.
8) Going in Settings and changing the audio Drivers (XAudio2, FMODs, DirectSound) didn't do anything.

I'm starting to wonder if, perhaps, it's only a question of the emulator itself not being able to fully emulate the particular sounds of MK1? (But then why would the crackling only start specifically at the title screen of the game, and not before that point?). I remember having sound issues (not crackling, but different type of sound issues) with both Earthworm Jim games on a different SNES emulator years ago. Then I switched to another emulator (not this one) and that other emulator didn't have a single sound-related issue with them.

Is this simply a known (and maybe non-fixable) issue with MK1 specifically on SNES9X?

Thanks for the help and time guys.

Thank you very much, 1.55 works very well! The sound issues with MK1 are gone :)
